Wayne Ronald Jones

Wayne Ronald Jones, 90, of Atwood, died at 3:00a.m., Sunday, May 28, 2023, at Tuscola Health Care Center, Tuscola.

Visitation will be held at Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 East US Highway 36, Atwood on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, from 5:00pm – 6:30p.m.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The burial will be held at the Lake Fork Cemetery, rural Atwood, IL with military gravesite rites accorded.

Wayne was born on July 24, 1932, in Pierson Station, IL. He was the son of Troy & Laverne Jones. He married Bonnie Kimmel on February 27, 1952, at the Lake Fork Church in Atwood. He is reunited with her now.

Along with his son, Kevin, he is survived by his granddaughter and son-in-law, Payton and Todd Wellbaum, brother: Arnold Jones of Pierson Station and sister: Lois West of Mt. Zion. His daughter, Katrina Wellbaum and brother: Carl Lee Jones both preceded him in death.

Wayne graduated from Atwood High School in 1950. He worked at Mueller and Co. in Decatur, IL and farmed most of his life. He was a Corporal in the US Army during the Korean War (1952-1954), serving in C-Battery, in the 176th Armored Field Artillery Battalion.

Wayne loved traveling with his family, and one of his favorite vacation spots was Gatlinburg, TN, near the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. He was fond of trap shooting when he was young. He loved animals, having many cats, dogs, and even two rescued squirrels as pets. He and Bonnie enjoyed attending all of their children’s and grandchildren’s sporting and music events. He loved shopping for antiques with Bonnie and was an avid Cubs fan.
