Atwood Man Arrested in Domestic Dispute, Piatt County Officer Fires Gun

Police investigating a domestic dispute in the 300-block of North Missouri Street in Atwood.

Illinois State Police are investigating an incident involving an officer discharging his firearm after a Piatt County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a domestic disturbance.

At approximately 1:54am, on September 17, 2022, the Piatt County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a domestic disturbance occurring at a residence in the 300-block of North Missouri Street in Atwood. While deputies were responding to the report, they were informed that this situation allegedly involved a firearm.

Upon arrival a Piatt County Deputy made contact with Marc Thompson who was armed with a firearm. Verbal commands were given but not followed, and ultimately the deputy opened fire. No one was hit by gunfire nor were any deputies injured in the incident.

Piatt County Deputies arrested Thompson, 39-years old, on preliminary charges of aggravated unlawful use of weapons, aggravated assault, domestic battery, and resisting police. He was transported to the Piatt County Jail.

The identity of the deputy has not been released at this time and he will remain on leave while the Piatt County Sheriff’s Office follows department protocols and state guidelines regarding this incident.
