The Cerro Gordo-Bement volleyball team hopes to be better than last year.

Head coach Victoria Hermann said it was a rough start to the season having three players suffering injuries to start. The second week all three of them returned which became the first week of practice.

Well, it was a rough start. We had three injuries

“I was really impressed with how the three girls that came back from their injuries have, they didn’t just sit during their injuries, they were doing workouts, all of them have some kind of a leg issue,” Coach Hermann said. “So they were doing arm workouts, they were still doing their workouts at home, and they were paying attention the first week of practice. So coming in, I feel great about the season.”

The team has been focusing on ball placement to start the season. The reasoning is if Coach Hermann or the team sees an open spot on the other court, the time will hit the sports and find the holes of their opponent.

Coach Hermann has named three captains. The lone senior Lexus Lawhorn will serve as speaking casting and play setter and was a captain her junior year also. Junior Alli Walker is the second captain and she will play outside hitter. Junior Sky Tieman is the third captain who will serve as the libero (defensive back specialist). Junior Haley Simpson will also be expected to contribute as her and the two junior captains due to their friendship and chemistry on and off the court.

Lawhorn has taken on the captain role of bringing everyone together and keeping everybody up.

“I usually have a lot of energy, and I try to keep that going,” Lawhorn said.

Lawhorn’s individual goal is to hopefully continue her career into college and her team goal is to go far in the postseason. Lawhorn wants to be remembered by her teammates and coaches as a good leader.

Tieman has taken her captain role as being a leader by example and being a role model and someone that younger girls can look up to. Tieman’s individual goal is to continue to get better and her team goal is to have a fun season and a winning season.

Walker has taken on her captain role as motivating her teammates and making sure the team has a good attitude. Walker’s individual goal is to have 200 kills this season and the team goal is to have a winning season.

Coach Hermann expects her captains and leaders to take the reins when it comes to keeping up morale and when the team is not playing well they will turn it around.

Coach Hermann expects her team to be better due to the returning athletes and the fact that her team is young and continuing to gain experience.

Coach Hermann’s overall message to readers and the community is that this will be a fun team to watch.

“They have a great friendship and can see that on the court,” Coach Hermann said. They love each other as a team and as friends. “They’re fun to watch. Every time they get a kill, they all come together and just high fives smile and it’s contagious. They make the audience and crowd want to be there.”
