MTZ boys track and field makes school history

The Mt. Zion boys track team won the IHSA 2A Sectional meet at Tolono Unity last Thursday. The Braves won the meet for the first time in school history and will compete in 12 events this week at the IHSA 2A Boys State Track Championship.

The Braves’ state qualifiers are a mix of nine individual events spread out between six individuals and then two relay teams. There are three Braves’ athletes competing in two individual events and then one individual who will compete in four events all together.

That athlete is senior Christian Keyhea. Keyhea qualified for the 100 meters with a time of 10.82 seconds that will rank him second going into the semifinals. In the 200 meters, Keyhea is renKed in first place with a time of 21.66 seconds.

Keyhea also will team up with three other Braves’ teammates in two relays. In the 4×200, the Braves’ team of Keyhea, Matthias Adams, Kemper Koslofski and Chiren Petty qualified with a time one minute and 30 seconds are ranked fourth going in. The same team will compete in the 4×100 relay, coming in at ninth place with a time of 43.10 seconds.

Sam Atkinson qualified for two events. Atkinson will compete in the 400 meters, with a qualifying time of 49.92 seconds that will make him fourth ranked going in. Atkinson is ranked third going into the 800 meters with a time of one minute and 55 seconds.

Brayden Trimble qualified and will compete in the triple jump ranking 13th and coming in with a 12.96 meter jump.

Kyle Hensley is ranked third in the Pole Vault with a qualifying jump of 4.60 meters. Josh England is ranked 18th in the Discus with a qualifying throw of 44.67 meters.

Ryne Buttz is ranked 15th in shot put with a qualifying throw of 15.05 meters. Julian Banker is ranked sixth in the 3200 meters with a qualifying time of nine minutes and 41 seconds.
