Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond High School is proud to announce that senior cheerleader student-athlete Layna Kapp will be committing to continue her athletic participation on the intercollegiate level at Southern Illinois University. Layna plans to double major in Sociology and Social Work. Located in Carbondale, Illinois, SIU is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference and competes at the NCAA Division 1 level. Members of the spirit squad are responsible for being available to promote Saluki spirit at the following events: all home volleyball games, all home men’s basketball games, all home football games, all women’s basketball games, all campus wide specialty events, some out of town basketball games, rotation appearances at some campus wide events, and rotation appearances at some elementary/high school events or community events. Kapp has been a four-year varsity letter winner in cheer and was an instrumental part of the Knights cheer team. Layna has been cheering since she was a 7th grader and has earned various cheer accolades including team captain and the leadership award. Layna attended UCA camp in June of 2021 and qualified to perform at the Citrus Bowl in January of 2022. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Layna has been an honor roll student and a member of FCCLA for three years. Layna’s parents are Jen Riley and Eric Kapp. Layna is pictured here with her mom.
