The Story of the Lovington Coal Mine is the May Program for MCHGS
Lovington, Illinois was once the home of a 900 foot deep coal mine producing the highest quality coal in central Illinois.
Because of it, city fathers of Lovington expected their town to become one of the largest towns in the area.
Come to the society’s regular meeting on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. at Lovington’s Fire House on Route 32 in the heart of town to hear what happened to this productive, rich mine.
Ralph Kirk, Sullivan and Dale Jones, Lovington, have produced this interesting Power Point program based on Jones’ extensive collection of history of the mine. The meeting is being held in the Lovington Fire House so that any local people can easily attend and share memories about the mine. The public is invited to attend.
Progress continues on the remodeling of the society’s new Moultrie County History Center on south route 32 in Sullivan, which will house a museum, a history and genealogical library and a meeting place for the community.
