MTZ girls soccer goes 3-1 to finish regular season

The Mt. Zion girls soccer team finished its regular season last week 3-1 with wins against Eisenhower/MacArthur, Lincoln and Champaign Centennial. The lone loss came against Mattoon.

Against Eisenhower/MacArthur the Braves won 7-0. Mackenzie Krieger and Boston Flanigan each had two goals. Sydney Howerton, Maddie Kendall and Wrigley Donahue had a goal each. Donahue, Krieger, Howerton and Isabelle Holmes each had an assist while Kendall led the Braves with two assists.

Against Lincoln, the Braves won 3-1. Krieger netted a hat trick for the Braves scoring all three goals and Howerton had an assist.

Against Mattoon, the Braves lost 8-1. Kendall scored the lone goal off a Flanigan assist.

Against Centennial, the Braves won 5-2. Flanigan and Howerton each scored two for the Braves and Lindsay Scherer added one as well.

The Mt. Zion Braves finish their regular season 15-5 and a 6-4 Apollo Conference record. The Braves will play in a regional semifinal against Jacksonville on Tuesday, May 17 at 5 p.m at Jacksonville. The winner will face Chatham-Glenwood in the regional semifinal on Saturday, May 21 at 11 a.m.

“We were happy to end a four game week on a good note, with a win over Centennial,” Head coach Jonathan Moore said. “A 3-1 week, along with some time to heal and rest, will hopefully have us rolling full strength into our regional game against Jacksonville.”
