The Mt. Zion volleyball team won a 2-0 match against Charleston on the road. In the second set of the match, the Braves were tested but held on to win the set and the match.
Early in the second set, the Braves were up 12-5 after a Denver Anderson kill. The Trojans scored four straight points to cut the lead to 12-9. Anderson then scored again to give the Braves a 13-9 lead.
The Braves then went on a 7-2 run. Inside of that run, Barbie Barnes recorded a kill, Alexis Smith scored two kills and Hannah Sago recorded a block to give the Braves a 19-12 lead.
The Trojans then began to chip away at the lead. Audrey Jacob’s scored five of the next seven points for the Trojans off of kills and attacks to narrow the Braves lead to 21-20.
Anderson and Macie Fleming took over the match from there. Anderson and Fleming had back to back kills to give the Braves a 23-21 lead. The Trojans answered back and even took a 24-24 lead.
Fleming scored a kill to tie the match and then Sago blocked an attack that gave the Braves a 25-24 lead. The Trojans then failed to return the ball on the next serve that sealed the Braves 2-0 victory.
“We won and that was good, ‘’ head coach Traci Dyer Townsend said. “ I think we’re still trying to find that consistency. We had some inconsistency with some of our players. So it was frustrating. We can be a great team if we’re all in it and tonight I didn’t feel that way.”
As the season progresses, Coach Townsend believes that the biggest thing for her team is going to be playing for each other and playing as individuals.
The Mt. Zion volleyball team will face Mahomet-Seymour and Mattoon this week.
