CGB Girls’ Track Finishes Second in Lincoln Prairie Conference Meet; Boys Take Sixth

The Cerro Gordo Bronco girls’ track and field team took second place in the first ever Lincoln Prairie Conference track and field meet held at Okaw Valley High School on May 27. The girls scored 99.5 points to finish just 3.5 points behind first place Okaw Valley. The meet saw an hour and a half delay due to storms but was able to be completed after the delay. The CGB Broncos girls’ track and field team traveled to Bethany for the first Lincoln Prairie Conference meet hosted by Okaw Valley High School on May 27. The meet began in sunny weather but would see storm clouds roll in around 1:45 p.m. that would send everyone to the gym with four events remaining. After about a one and a half hour delay the meet resumed with cooler temperatures for the meet’s conclusion.

The CGB girls took second place in the team standings with 99.5 points just behind the host school Okaw Valley’s 103. Farmer City Blue Ridge was third with 68, Villa Grove was fourth with 61, Arcola was fifth with 52.75, Argenta Oreana was sixth with 52, Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond was seventh with 51, Hume Shiloh had 21, Toledo Cumberland scored 18, Decatur Lutheran had nine and Sangamon Valley score 8.75.

Sophomore Haley Garret won the long jump with a leap of 4.79m, took second in the triple jump, (9.53m), and second in the 400 meters, (1:05.79, PR) to lead the way for the Broncos. Her first place finish gives Haley the new conference record for the girls’ long jump as this was the first LPC meet and new records were established in it.

The 800m and 3200m relays finished in second place with times of 2:01.25 and 12:14.81 respectively. Scoring third place points were the 400m relay, (54.47); the 1600m relay, (4:47.59); Jazzi Hicks, shot put, (9.28m); Caroline Hill, 200m, (29.54); and Bella Zigler, in the pole vault, (2.13m). Fourth place finishes were earned by: Caroline Hill, 100m, (14.04 PR); Reese Brunner, 800m, (2:52.32 PR); Kayleigh Miller, 100m hurdles, (20.05 PR); Jazzi Hicks, discus, (29.96m PR); and Trinity Stroisch and Katherine Quick, high jump, (1.37m). Katherine Quick, 300m hurdles, (1:01.76); Addie Fritz, shot put, (9.04m); and Riley Brandenburg, triple jump, (8.76) took fifth places. Haylei Simpson, 400m, (1:11.2 PR) and Trinity Stroisch, 800m, (3:02.38) earned sixth place points.

300M Hurdles: Kayleigh Miller 1:03.28 PR

Discus: Addie Fritz 23.53m

Long Jump: Bella Zigler 4.16m

On the boys’ side, the CGB Broncos finished in sixth place with 30 points behind ALAH 179, Arcola 100, Villa Grove 72, Sangamon Valley 41, and Toledo Cumberland 31 and ahead of Argenta Oreana 28, Okaw Valley and Farmer City Blue Ridge 17 and Hume Shiloh 8.

Freshman Dylan Howell won a very close race in the 3200m outleaning Jacob Adcock of ALAH at the finish. Dylan’s time was 10:38.01 a personal record (PR). Dylan also took fourth in the 1600m, (5:03.84 PR). Chance Young jumped 1.72m in the high jump to finish in second place in that event. All of the boys’ relays earned fifth place finishes, the 400m relay, (51.21); 800m relay, (1:50.32); 1600m relay, (4:11.42) and the 3200m relay, (11:09.8).

The boys and girls both have Class 1A I.H.S.A. Sectionals that will be held at Tuscola High School. The girls will compete on June 4 and the boys on June 11. Both meets will have field events starting at 4:30 p.m. with running events scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Individuals and relays that finish in first or second place or meet qualifying standards will advance to the Class 1A I.H.S.A State Track and Field Championships on June 10 for the girls and June 17 for the boys.
