The Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond Knights football team traveled to nearby Arcola for their fourth game of the 2021 season. The Knights came into the contest with a 2-1 record while the Riders were 1-1 due to a cancelled first game.
The first half was a battle back and forth with the Riders getting on the scoreboard first on a 45 yard touchdown pass from Beau Jones to Kacee Moore. Kareem Tarejo kicked the extra point and the home team led 7-0.
The Knights first possession resulted in another school record field goal for kicker Aaron Likens. The drive stalling on the twenty five gave Likens a 41 yard field goal to make the score 7-3 in favor of the Riders with 6:47 left in the first quarter.
ALAH’s Kody Kornewald recovered an Arcola fumble but couldn’t move the ball and had to punt. An attempted field goal by Tarejo was blocked by the Knights’ defense at the 10:29 mark of the second. The Knights went on a long drive that ended with a 1 yard td run by Billy Fifer. Likens’ EP kick gave the Knights the 10-7 lead with 3:33 left in the first half.
Arcola countered with a drive of their own capping it off with a 10 yard pass from Jones to Moore again and with the point after kick, the home team reclaimed the lead with 15.2 seconds remaining in the half.
Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond received the second half kickoff but unfortunately they would be forced to punt and that would set the tone for the second half. The Knights just couldn’t put together any consistent drives and were unable to reach the end zone in the last two quarters.
Arcola did put two more scores on the board, both by Jed Jones, one a 33 yarder with 2:15 left in the third and a 22 yarder at the 10:21 mark of the fourth. Trejo kicked both extra points to make the final score 28-10 with the Riders coming out on top.
The Knights have two weeks remaining in their 2021 season. Next week they travel to Sangamon Valley for a game with the Storm. The following week, they return home for their season finale against the Argenta-Oreana Bombers.
