Knight’s Cross Country Wins Again

On Saturday, September 12, the Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond Knights cross country team loaded the bus at 6:00 AM to venture north to run the PBL Invitational in Paxton. The Knights again drew one of the featured heats of the day going against two state ranked foes, the host Panthers and the deep and talented Spartans of St Joe- Ogden.

Going off 1st at 8:00 AM, the Knight’s Layton Hall and PBL’s Ryder James battled for the 3rd consecutive weekend. Another tightly contested race developed wifh the talented Junior from Paxton pulling away from the Knight’s Senior standout over the final half mile in a near course record of 15:18.99.

For the 3rd weekend in a row the Knight’s dependable Sophomore, Logan Beckmier gave chase. After running down a pair of Spartan runners, Beckmier finishes 3rd in the heat and 5th overall. Lyle Adcock delivers another excellent performance taking down all but 2 SJO athletes to bring home 11th overall.

Jace Green and Jake Adcock engaged in their own 3 mile tussle with 3 SJO runners as well as a competitor from state ranked Unity. Battling to the end, Green finishes 20th overall with Jake Adcock 21st, less than a second behind in a personal best of 17:42.93.

Jacob Duzan and Connor Edmonds complete the Knight’s contingent placing 35th and 66th overall.

While facing a field containing 7 state ranked teams, the Knights prevailed by a 4 point margin over St. Joe- Ogden. Tolono Unity, Monticello, Bismarck-Henning, PBL, and Iroquois West fall in line respectively in this loaded field.

The Lady Knights again squared off against a field just as talented as their male teammates faced. Running shorthanded with less than the 5 required for team scoring, the ladies were in the mix. Charlie Condill again led the ladies way placing 34th. Following with her best effort of the year was Emma Edwards in 44th. Makenzie Brown and Sarah Rafferty finish up for the ladies in spots 52 and 54. If the Lady Knights field their usual lineup, it appears that they could have finished 5th behind a powerful quartet of the state’s elite 1A ladies teams including Monticello, Unity, St.Thomas More, and SJO.
