The Class AA Sectional track and field meet held at Cumberland High School on Saturday, May 11 started out as a sunny but chilly day. Good conditions for a meet. However the rainy spring that we have been experiencing this year came to the meet about two hours in and a steady and at times heavy rain set in for the duration of the meet. The jr. high boys and girls teams stepped up in spite of the adverse conditions and had some impressive performances. Three individuals will be competing at the Class AA I.E.S.A. State Track and Field meet next Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18 at East Peoria. To advance to the State meet, you must win your event or meet qualifying standards and with the adverse weather conditions those standards were difficult to attain.

Rylie Vanausdoll moved on to the state meet by winning the seventh grade 800 meters. It was a very exciting race with Rylie catching an Effingham girl right at the finish line! Rylie was the lone girl on the Knights’ track team to advance. She will be running the 800 meters on Saturday, May 18.

On the boys’ side, Landon Waldrop won the seventh grade long jump and will compete at state on Friday, May 17. Eighth grader, Kaden Feagin carried his winning ways into the post season taking first in the long jump, the 100 and 200 meters. He will compete in the long jump and 100 meter dash pre-lims on Friday and then on Saturday, will hopefully have advanced to the 100 finals and run the 200 meters.

Some of the ALAH athletes came oh so close to advancing by finishing in second place in their events. Rylie took second in the seventh grade girls’ 400 meters, Connor Nettles was second in the seventh grade boys 400 meters; Logan Beckmier was runner up in the eighth grade 1600 meters and the 800 meter relay team of Mason Allen, Waldrop, Nettles, Feagin and alternate Rylan Miller were also second place finishers.

It was a long, cold, wet day but the Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond Jr. High track teams did their schools and communities proud by doing their best in their events.
