State Police cites driver who ran into Arcola school bus on Rte. 133

The driver of the vehicle that struck an Arcola School District bus carrying elementary students on Thursday, May 9, has been issued citations by the Illinois State Police.

Korbin A. Barrett, 19, of Arcola was cited for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident in connection with the accident that occurred on Route 133 near Douglas County Road 500 E.

The bus, owned by Gould Bus Service, was traveling eastbound on the highway and carried 25 elementary students and four adult chaperones returning from a field trip to Decatur.

The bus was driven by Sherry Bare, 61.

Barrett was traveling westbound on the highway in a gray Dodge Charger.

According to the state police preliminary investigation, Barrett crossed the center line of Route 133 and into the path of the bus near the intersection of 500 E.

Bare attempted to avoid the oncoming automobile by slowing and swerving right onto the shoulder of the highway.

Barrett’s automobile struck the bus head-on. Barrett had to be extricated from the vehicle.

As a result of the accident, Barrett was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the state police report.

In addition, one adult and one student from the bus were transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

All other students and chaperones were transferred to another bus and were taken to the school where they were reunited with family members.

The report stated seatbelts were worn, and air bags deployed.

The accident occurred at 2:45 p.m.
