Kenneth Schwengel, superintendent of Arthur CUSD #305, has been named the 2019 Superintendent of Distinction by his colleagues in the Illini Region of the Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA).
Schwengel was honored at an awards luncheon May 9 in Springfield. State Superintendent Dr. Carmen Ayala was the featured speaker, where 21 IASA regional Superintendents of Distinction were recognized.
“It was an unexpected honor,” said Schwengel, who has been an educator for 33 years, including the last five as superintendent at Arthur CUSD #305. “To be recognized by my peers is a most humbling and rewarding gesture. My IASA colleagues and association have always been there when needed. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as superintendent.”
Those nominating Schwengel said he was instrumental in bringing together three small districts in the last seven years. Arthur CUSD #305 now has more than 1,200 students, 160 staff members and 252 square miles, featuring four buildings in three communities.
“This was not my accomplishment, but rather our accomplishment in an effort to provide more opportunities for students, as well as maintain a fiscally responsible school district with one of the lowest tax rates in the state,” he said.
Each Superintendent of Distinction was nominated by peers in their regions based on their commitment, dedication and leadership.
“These extraordinary individuals truly provide exceptional leadership that elevates the success of students in their districts and are difference makers in their communities,” said IASA Executive Director Dr. Brent Clark.
The fifth annual luncheon was again sponsored by Horace Mann, one of the nation’s largest insurers focusing on the needs of educators.
“We are proud to recognize these Superintendents of Distinction who are creative, dedicated, inspiring, and consistently create strong learning environments in their districts,” said Marita Zuraitis, Horace Mann President and Chief Executive Officer.
Schwengel and his wife, Stephanie, have three children. The Illini region is comprised of Champaign, Vermillion, Douglas, Coles and Edgar counties.
